The Leader From Behind is a phrase that I have come to desire a better understanding. If you are a manager, parent, friend, or mentor of any kind then you have the ability, actually the responsibility to be the Leader From Behind.
I have the wonderful opportunity of being a father, husband, brother, son, friend to those I have contact with daily. I find it my duty to be a leader to these people in my life. Now a leader is not someone that has control or forces you into doing something, in fact a true leader from behind exudes no type of control or force. The leader gives insight and love to those he or she feels they have a stewardship over.
There are two people in my life that have been true leaders from behind….
First off, my father. He has always been there for me in a way this is hard to describe. He has guided me to a place that I believe I would not have found on my own. When I made mistakes in my life he was there to lift me up. He never got mad at my mistakes, he simply told me the reason why they were mistakes and how I could remedy them. All my dad had to do was give me the special glare and I new that I was disappointing him and that was the last thing I wanted. Of course my Mom was a big piece of my growing up and I thank her for her love and kindness.
The second person that has been the leader from behind in my life recently is Alex Mandossian. He is to me, a role model and a mentor. Alex is a wonderful teacher and improver. I look up to him in many ways as I have talked with him on the phone and in person. I am truly thankful to him and others as a leader from behind.
How can you be The Leader from Behind?
It is really quite simple when it comes down to it.
- Be to others what your leaders and mentors have been to you.
- Be an example and a friend.
- Listen first, speak last.
- Love, cherish and enjoy.
Those are some things that I am working on in my life to be like my Dad and Alex. Is the leader from behind perfect? No, they are consistent!

Nice and true thought. I think it is the most difficult for someone to be leader from behind. For me, my mom was. I wish to be for couple people in life. Especially for my son but I think my hubby is going to take the position. Anyways, I planned a blog for similar role for all the world.
