I had the opportunity to interview my Mom for my second Monday interview podcast and was able to ask her a couple question about SEO and Social Media. Find out what the normal everyday person knows about SEO and Social Media.

Here is the transcript of the interview below if you would rather read:

Garrett: Hello everyone. This is Garrett Pierson, Your SEO Mentor. Glad to have you all back. Here’s is today’s Monday interview. I’m interviewing somebody really special in my life; somebody who really doesn’t know anything about SEO. I thought it would be kind of fun to see what the outside world, people who are not in the SEO industry and social media industry, understands about Search Engine Optimization and social media. I’m here with my mom, Cheri Pierson. Glad to have you on, mom.

Cheri: Hi. It’s great to be here.

Garrett: Good. We’re going to have a back and forth dialog. This interview is not going to be very long. Mom, what is your understanding, from our casual talks about what I do and what I’ve been helping you do at Scrapbooktalkradio.com; what is SEO (Search Engine Optimization)?

Cheri: To me it’s that I Google the word ‘scrapbook’ and I know that if I Google that, hopefully my website will come to the top of the page or somewhere on that first page, so that people will see it and that hopefully it will be the number one spot. That’s kind of what I think it is.

Garrett: I thought that was funny, that you said ‘Googled’ it. That’s kind of become a verb. I think it’s actually in the dictionary. That tells you that it’s the number one search engine. I like how you said, “… be on the first page, at the top of Google when they search for scrapbook.” Your Scrapbooktalkradio.com is a podcasting blog. You, Melissa and Carli, my sisters, sit around and podcast about scrapbooking.

Just from what you said, if somebody searches ‘scrapbook’, that you would want to be found on the first page. That’s true. Just so you know, and so the listeners understand, and most of you probably do, ‘scrapbook’ is pretty broad and very competitive. It’s going to be very hard to get Scrapbooktalkradio.com up on the first page of Google, for the key word ‘scrapbook’. It’s not impossible, but again it’s pretty broad; it’s pretty tough. But, you want to go for long-tail key words, key words that are targeted to your audience and that are not so competitive.

Cheri: Like, I would type in ‘scrapbooking podcast’.

Garrett: Right. I’m pretty sure that from the last time I looked, we are on the first page in Google for ‘scrapbook podcast’, and I think also for ‘scrapbooking podcast’. I haven’t done a ton of search engine optimization at the blog, but just because we have some great content there and those are some of the keywords that we have optimized for, we are on the first page of Google for those key words, as of last week, when I checked.

Cheri: We should be.

Garrett: Exactly. From the little you know about Search Engine Optimization that was a good definition from your opinion, of what it is.

The next thing that I want to ask you is about the newest kind of trend and phase on online, and with online marketers, which is social media and social marketing. Do you have any idea what social media and social marketing is?

Cheri: Not at all. I’ve heard of it, but I don’t know what it is.

Garrett: Not at all?

Cheri: I don’t think so. I could probably make a guess.

Garrett: Okay, make your best educated guess.

Cheri: You want to market your website socially.

Garrett: That’s good. When you think of social media, and I’m going to give you a couple of hints and ideas, have you ever heard of YouTube?<.p>

Cheri: Yes.

Garrett: Have you ever heard of Digg.com?

Cheri: No.

Garrett: Have you ever heard of Stumbleupon.com?

Cheri: No.

Garrett: Have you ever heard of Twitter.com?

Cheri: Yes.

Garrett: You’ve heard of Twitter?

Cheri: Yes.

Garrett: Have you ever heard of Plurk.com?

Cheri: No.

Garrett: Have you ever heard of Del.icio.us?

Cheri: No.

Garrett: But, you have heard of YouTube; how about Facebook?

Cheri: Yes

Garrett: Myspace.com

Cheri: Yes.

Garrett: Okay. It sounds like your guess was that people are trying to market socially. You were exactly right. What social media is, and what some of these sites that I just talked about are, are social media sites, social networking sites where people can be social, build relationships, and if you’re doing it from a marketing standpoint, you want to build relationships; you don’t want to just sell.

For example, we’re going to be doing some things to help you and the girls at Scrapbookingtalkradio.com to be social on Twitter, submitting stuff on StumbleUpon, Facebook; you’ve created a Facebook account. That’s what social media is. It’s kind of building relationships, and getting into these social networking sites; becoming friends with people. In your target niche, you’re going to want to start building relationships and friendships with people who are interested in scrapbooking. You are going to be using some of those main key words, like scrapbooking, scrapbooking supplies, scrapbooking podcasts, in these areas. You’re going to start making friends, for example, on Facebook. You’re going to say, “Hey, glad to be your friend. I want to talk to you about scrapbooking. Here’s my scrapbooking site at Scrapbooktalkradio.com.”

Garrett: I wanted to do this episode and this interview with my mom, mainly because it was more of a back and forth kind of teaching her as well, but I wanted my listeners and people listening to my podcasts, to understand what the real world, what your mom, your grandmother, your friends who have no idea what Search Engine Optimization and Social Media are; what their take is, and their view and perspective on it is.

There; you guys have my mom’s perspective. I’ve told her a little bit about it, just because that’s what I do for a living. She kind of knew, but she still had no idea what social media, the word, was. She knew what Facebook and Twitter were, but she didn’t know how to use them in a more social marketing way. When she talked about Search Engine Optimization, she actually knew the general gist of what it was. But, when it comes to the technical stuff, I guess you have no idea, do you?

Cheri: No, I don’t.

Garrett: Okay, that’s cool. That’s it for today, for my Monday Interview episode, here at Yourseomentor.com. Place your comments here at the blog post, at the Monday Interview with my mom, and check out some of the other podcasts. If you are interested at all in scrapbooking, which I’m guessing my listeners are not, but they could be, go over to scrapbookingtalkradio.com, where my mom and sisters podcast all about scrapbooking. Thanks everybody, for listening. Have a great day.
