My interview this week was with the smart and interesting Ron Hudson. Be careful because his stories and advice will draw you in and you won’t be able to stop listening above or reading the transcript below. Ron gives amazing advice on how to be successful in this down economy that you can’t miss.
Garrett: Hello, everybody, this is Garrett Pierson here, ‘Your SEO Mentor’. I’m here today with Ron Hudson, of Howtoinfluencepeoplenow.com. How are you, Ron?
Ron: I’m great. Thanks for having me, Garrett. How are you?
Garrett: I’m good. I’ve had a wonderful day. I’m happy it’s the weekend. I’m going to relax with the family. I can’t complain.
I just want to give a quick overview of you, Ron. If I make any mistakes, you can correct those. Ron is the CEO of Success Strategies Research International, Inc. Ron is an author, radio talk show host, and he is trained in CMNLP. Ron, you’re going to have to tell us what that is, in a second here. He is a business growth strategist and strategic influence trainer and coach. He has had the privilege of training sales people at companies such as Coldwell Banker, Dean Witter, Goldmine Software Corporation, New York Life, Cellular One, Lexus, and many others.
Some of Ron’s specialties, again, are the NAC and NLP. Again, we’ll get into that in a little bit more detail, but marketing strategy optimization persuasion, joint ventures; the list goes on and on. This guy knows it all.
Ron: No, I don’t [laughs].
Garrett: You can also check his radio show at Blogtalkradio.com/immediateinfluence. Ron, I’ll make sure I have links to that on my blog post, at YourSEOMentor.com.
There are so many things about you, but why don’t you just tell us a little bit about yourself, for those that might not know you, your background in the training and coaching, marketing industries, your family, your hobbies, or anything. Just give it to us, Ron.
Ron: There is a lot there. I’m forty-four years old. There is a lot to talk about. I’ll give you the nutshell story of the nine-hundred foot view of my life. The best place to start is how I really began on this path of training and especially in the areas of human behavior, human psychology.
It really started in 1981. I was still in high school. I was working as a janitor. I was skipping school, doing drugs, and I did not have a compelling vision for my life at that time. I was really down on myself. I was even considering dropping out of high school. Then something happened.
One of the things that really shifted my life, and caused me to go in a totally different direction is one day I came home. I was having a conversation with my mother and she said my dad had called. My dad and I had a terrible relationship. It had been that way from the time I was probably old enough to talk. It had been up and down, as far as our relationship goes. My dad just happened to have called at this particular time. I don’t remember if it was around my birthday, or what. I don’t know what prompted the call.
Apparently, in a conversation with my mother, she told him that I was skipping school, doing drugs, and was probably going to drop out of high school. His response to that was, “I’m not surprised.” My mother communicated that to me. When I heard it, I became so angry at my dad, but I have to tell you it was a turning point in my life, like none other. I guarantee you the reason I am here, one of the reasons I’m here in this place right now, that I’m in, in my career, is because of hearing my dad say those words, through my mother.
He obviously had come to a point where he felt like, “I’m not surprised; this is what he is.” The direction that I was going and those things I was doing, and the things I was involved in. When I heard it, it shook me to my core. Within twenty-four or forty-eight hours of hearing it, I was at that janitorial job one night. I was pushing the buffing machine, and literally started thinking, “If I continue to do this, what I’m doing, if I continue down the path that I’m on right now, and I don’t finish high school, I continue to do drugs, I may end up working in this position, at this company for the rest of my life.” That was literally my thought.
At that point, it was all I could really see. But, I was so angry at my dad for having this disbelief in me, that I started thinking to myself, “That is not the vision that I have for my life. It’s not the vision that I’m going to settle for in my life. I know there is more possible. I just don’t know how to get there. I don’t know how to make it happen.” I didn’t have any role models. I didn’t have anyone that I could go to, sit down with, and say, “You’re a millionaire. Show me how to get there.” I didn’t have that.
What I started doing is looking at books. I started picking up books and reading them. One of the first books I read really was so insightful, in terms of what it revealed as it relates to human behavior. After reading that book, I made a decision that I was going to get to know my dad and why he looked at me the way he did, why we had the type of relationship that we had.
That was one of the big pains, if you will, in my life. Two things really shape human behavior. That is either big pain or big success, big rewards. Those two things will always shape us. Back then, that was a pain for me. I don’t know of anyone who wants for their parent or parents to think that they’re not going to amount to much, which is really what that implied to me. I just really wasn’t going to amount to much.
Fortunately, for me, I did not adopt that belief about myself. Instead, I went the opposite direction. I started saying to myself, “I’m going to prove him wrong. I don’t know how right now, but I’m going to do whatever it takes to prove him wrong.”
The moment that we start asking ourselves a different question about our lives, the moment we start asking, “How can I turn it around, how can I do something I enjoy doing, and earn some money,” actually do something you enjoy doing and earn some money or being paid to do it. – I ended up reading this book. It totally opened my eyes to what human beings of capable of. What we are capable of as human beings is absolutely phenomenal. You probably know – I’m sure you know, actually, the difference is we’re capable of limitless amounts of accomplishments but most of the time we live lives of disappointment. We generally don’t accomplish all that we’re really capable of.
As a result of reading this book, I made a decision. I got through that book. It took me very little time to read it. I made a decision I was going to get to know my father. I got to know him. I utilized what I learned in that book, to get to know him, and understand his behavior. It relieved me of a lot of pain, as it related to him.
Once you come to a point where you understand, and this is just what happened for me, when you understand why someone treats you the way they do, especially when they are treating you poorly, and if it’s a parent of all people in your life, this is someone who is supposed to love you. This person is supposed to love you with all your heart and do whatever they can for you. When you have the opposite of that going on, so many children or teenagers, which is what I was at the time, will communicate to themselves something other than that. They will give up on themselves because their parent doesn’t believe in them, so why should they?
The reason it really happened is because his dad treated him poorly. He had a terrible relationship with his dad. Naturally, he was going to have one with me. But, I didn’t know that until I decided, “I’m going to get to know my dad. I don’t care what he says; I don’t care what he does.” Let me make something very clear. He wasn’t physically abusive or anything. I’m talking mental, emotional abuse, in that he was very cold and distant.
I got to know him. I spent time asking him questions, catching him at opportune times to ask him questions about his life. He started answering those questions for me. As a result of that, I got a big reward. The big reward was, “Wow! I understand my Dad.” I could say at that time, after I went through the process of getting to know him, “I understand my Dad and I love him.” Before that, it was probably one of the few times I could say in my life, where I hated him. I had such anger toward my dad, until I let go of that anger, and started walking in forgiveness.
To anyone listening, one of the best decisions you can make in your life is to forgive those people who have hurt you. A lot of times, they don’t even know that they hurt you. Sometimes they do, and they did it on purpose. Regardless of what the case may be, one of the best decisions you can make in your life, that will free you, is to forgive people who have hurt you. That’s exactly what I did before I made that decision to get to know him.
As a result of having that big reward, emotional reward of, “Now I know my Dad, and I love him. I respect him,” and really was grateful for different things I thought were really harsh things he was doing, in terms of how he was treating me. It was really something that helped me become the person I am today. I honor my dad. There are several things he did, I won’t go into now, but they really molded me into the person I am now. The same thing with my Mom.
That experience pushed me, motivated me to continue down this path of learning about human behavior, human psychology. Eventually I ended in Washington, D.C. I graduated from high school. I ended up going to summer school. I finished on the Honor Roll. I didn’t finished my college degree because I was so impatient.
I found I could learn in a book. People listening to this would more than likely agree with this. You can pick up a book, even more so nowadays, of someone who has become successful in business, and you can learn, from that book, what they did. Then you can buy a home study course. Then you can go to a live seminar. I started down that path.
I started going to seminar after seminar, buying home study courses. All of them were related in this area of human behavior, human psychology, Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Neuro-Associative Conditioning, influence, persuasion, negotiations, anything that had to do with understanding human behavior and how to be more effective in my ability to communicate with people, how to build better relationships. That’s what it’s all about.
When it really comes down to it, a successful company is made up of successful people, people who are committed to that company becoming successful. I continued on that path. I found models, role models, of people who are the best at what they do.
For example, one of the gentlemen who I direct marketing from, is Jay Abraham. Jay Abraham is one of America’s highest-paid marketing consultants. He has seminars that are five thousand, twenty-five thousand, and fifty-thousand dollars. When you know someone is the best at what they do, it’s a great idea, if possible, for you to latch onto them. Here’s why; when you want to achieve a particular result, whether it is in business or in your personal life, there’s someone who is already achieved that. Why recreate the wheel?
Before I had come across that first book that I read, that’s what I was thinking. I thought I was going to have to create a way to make it happen. That was so silly. Fortunately, something happened. I think I was looking for another job.
In fact, I know I was. I actually got fired from that janitorial job. The guy said I wasn’t effective at the job. Talk about some slams against my self-esteem. I’m amazed now, when I look back on my life, and look back at that time in my life, that I was able to pull myself up by my bootstraps and move on with my life, and make anything out of it. It did not look like it was going to happen.
I found that as I continue to focus on what direction did I want to go in, what did I want to make out of my life, teachers showed up. The old adage that, “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear”; I’ve had many teachers in my life. There are some I didn’t have to pay, fortunately; they were generous enough to just take me under their wing, and pour into me. They saw that I was hungry. They saw I wanted to be more than I was. I wanted to accomplish more than I was accomplishing. There’s always another level, no matter where you are in your life; there’s always another level.
What are some of the other things? As I stated, I went through training. I’m a certified Master Practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming. That’s what the CM in front of the NLP means.
Garrett: Why don’t you go into that a little bit more? The best thing about you, Ron, is you always have a story. I loved that personal story you just shared with us. I’m sure it hits home, or to the hearts of some people who have maybe gone through the same kinds of things. Maybe some people haven’t, they’ve gone through something a little bit different. But, everybody has to build upon, has to learn for themselves. That story about you and your dad was great. It didn’t hit home necessarily to me, because I had a great relationship with my father, but from the story you told, I took how you changed your life and what you learned from that. It’s what you’re doing now. You’re helping people get through that. You’re helping people build those relationships. You learned all that starting with your dad. That’s so cool.
Ron: Yeah, thank you. That was the beginning for me. To go into what Neuro-Linguistic Programming is; is that what you wanted me to do?
Garrett: To tell you the truth, until I met you, I had never heard of it. I guess you could call me young and naïve, but I’ve never heard of NAC and NLP. Why don’t you just go into detail of what those are, and how it can help us as business owners, entrepreneurs, or just people, be more successful.
Ron: Okay. I’ll give you somewhat of a technical definition of both. First, I’ll start with Neuro-Linguistic Programming. NLP is what it’s more popularly known as. It is the study of human excellence. Simply what that means is that we are able to find someone or identify someone who is exceptional at what they do, they’re successful, they do certain things, and they achieve a result. We are able to find out what it is that that person does, more importantly let me start with this; you find out what their beliefs are. You find out what their strategy is for achieving the goal or desire that you may want. You find out what order they do that in. In a nutshell, that is the way I would like people to think of NLP. It’s a tool. It’s a science that enables the practitioner to model excellence.
There are a plethora of tools and techniques within NLP that have come about as a result of modeling excellence. There are tons of tools. In fact, I sometimes say that it would more than likely fill up a couple of football stadiums, in terms of how many techniques and tools there are, or methods available, to really help people to become more successful at anything they want to become successful in. That’s NLP
Neuro-Associative Conditioning, or NAC – let me back up and give credit where credit is due. NLP was developed by Richard Bandler and John Grinder, back in the early 1970’s. it’s been around for a long time. NAC, Neuro-Associative Conditioning, was created by Tony Robbins, who more people know, than Richard Bandler and John Grinder. It’s simply because Tony has been, and is, a brilliant marketer. He came up with this science of Neuro-Associative Conditioning after becoming a master at NLP.
What Neuro-Associative Conditioning is, is the study of the systems that describe how your brain and nervous system are conditioned to associate meaning to the events in your life. Conditioning is simply a synonym for learning. It is the deep, electrical, and biochemical learning imprinting of your nervous system. All it really means is, as you go through your life, you are asking a couple of questions about any event. That is, “What does this mean,” and “What should I do?” Add to that, you’re asking, “What does this mean, based on my experience, and what should I do based on my experience?” All of that is driven by your beliefs. The beliefs that we have about what has occurred in the past, what is occurring now, and what will occur in the future, comes out of what we believe. Does that make sense?
Garrett: Yeah, totally.
Ron: How does NLP or NAC help anyone become more successful? It’s very simple. Let’s talk about why someone would not be successful. It has everything to do with what they believe about themselves. Let’s stay with that. If you believe that you aren’t going to be successful, what are the chances of you being successful? If you believe that you’re not supposed to be in business, what are the chances that you’re going to go into business? More millionaires have been created in business as opposed to working for someone else. There are certainly times when people become a millionaire working for someone else, but the chances of that happening are fairly slim.
If someone has the belief that, “I’m too young to start a business; I’m too old to start a business,” when they have those types of beliefs about that area – let me ask you. How much action do you believe they’ll take?
Garrett: How much action? Is that what you said?
Ron: How much action do you believe they’ll take, if they have those beliefs about themselves?
Garrett: Almost none.
Ron: More than likely, absolutely none, because they don’t believe. They don’t have any belief that they can be successful. If they do take any action, it’s going to be that haphazard type of action. It’s going to be that ‘not going for it full-out’.
Garrett: That’s interesting, Ron. I can bring another story into this really quickly. I’m twenty-seven now. When I was twenty-one years old, I said, “I’m going to own a business, my own business, whatever it is, by the time I’m thirty.” That was a huge goal in my life. Talking about what you’re talking about, it was in my mind. It was something that I wanted. I more than surpassed my goal. I owned my own business by the time I was twenty-five. It was successful. I totally can envision how this helps us, or anyone, be successful, no matter what it is. It might not even be business. It might be baseball. We’re in the playoffs, right? A lot of those guys playing in the playoffs had that in their minds. It totally makes sense. Sorry to interrupt you there. I totally see the picture now.
Ron: What allows us to tap into our human potential are the beliefs that we have. The opposite of that are, obviously, the beliefs that we don’t have also cause us to either tap into more of our potential or it doesn’t. We really have to be cognizant of the beliefs we have. We have to be very conscious of the internal conversations we are having. Those are beliefs. Some of them are opinions. Some are convictions.
Opinions can be swayed, they change, and they’re temporary. There can have tremendous impact in people’s lives when they come to a point where there is something – let me just say this. Everyone listening has something they used to believe, that they don’t believe anymore. I sent a message to one of my Twitter friends last night, that basically said, because he said his coworkers think he is a jerk. He said it was a general consensus that he was a jerk. I sent him a message saying, “Many years ago, the consensus was that the world was flat. Some disagreed.” I disagreed with that.
A lot of times, you are able to change beliefs when you become conscious of them. When you say, “That belief isn’t serving me. That belief isn’t going to help me achieve the vision I have in my mind. What belief do I need to have in its place?” Sometimes it can be that easy to change a belief or shift a belief, and then adopt a new belief. It’s those empowering beliefs that are going to move us in the direction, move us toward the vision we have in our lives, and in some cases, we’ll move effortless toward our vision and accomplish it in a very short period of time.
NAC and NLP – what I can do with people, what I’ve done in the past with people, and what I do currently with anyone, – there are a number of things I do, obviously. I don’t just do group coaching. I do speaking and all types of things. But, in a situation where you find someone is in sales, and they are reluctant to make cold calls, and that’s a part of their job, but over time, they’ve become very reluctant to doing it, they’ve developed a negative association, a negative neuro-association to making those calls. That is something I’ve worked with, and helped people to break through.
When you’re able to change how you feel about something – when you think about it, what people want is one of two things. They either want to change how they feel, or they want to change a behavior. NLP and NAC give us the ability to help people accomplish that; to change a behavior that is not serving them, and won’t lead in the direction that they want. Or, to change the way they feel about something so that it will no longer hinder them in going after what they want.
Garrett: That’s interesting. Let’s say a new entrepreneur is coming into a certain market; it doesn’t matter what it is. How would you use your training, coaching, and marketing background? What is some advice or tips that you would give them, on this basis that you’re talking about, their behavior?
Ron: First and foremost, I would ask to identify what behaviors there are. They would have to tell me. I would have to be in a situation where I know what those behaviors are. Let me share an example of someone who started a business recently, more than likely been three months or four months ago. This person started a business. As it turns out, this person revealed to their coach that they didn’t like sales. In fact, they hated sales. Being in business requires you to be involved in sales, especially when you’re first starting out. You are a solopreneur, which is what this gentleman was
To help someone like that, first they have to want to be helped. The three most difficult things to do in the world is to kiss someone leaning away from you, climb a fence that’s leaning toward you, and help someone who doesn’t want to be helped. It’s not going to happen.
When I know what someone’s problems are, if I know what’s at the root of the problems that they are having, but first and foremost I want to know what those problems are. That comes with doing a diagnostic, if you will, and finding out, like a doctor would, what’s going on in your life. What’s happening that you don’t want to happen? What do you want to happen? What’s preventing it from happening? In that conversation, I end up finding out what the root cause is. We deal with that root cause.
Garrett: If somebody didn’t have a coach like you, which they should, but if they didn’t, those are some questions they could write down and ask themselves?
Ron: Absolutely. I’m glad you asked that. You can say to yourself, what do you want? What’s preventing you from having already achieved that? In answering those two questions, it will reveal to you what it is that’s stopping you. It’s generally going to come out – it comes out in different ways. It’s going to be a belief that you’re holding onto, that you have to let go of.
Sometimes, when you become conscious of what the belief is, that’s all that’s needed. You move on. A lot of the times, most of the time, there are deep-seated beliefs that people have that totally hinder them from making things happen in their life.
Asking the question, “What do I want?” and once you’re answered that, “What’s preventing me from having already achieved this?” Then ask this question, “If I don’t change this, what’s going to happen?” What are the implications, what are the consequences of me not changing the way I feel about sales, or the way I feel about networking, or the way I feel about sitting down and writing a marketing piece? What’s going to happen? Looking at the consequences.
From there, what’s the opposite of that? “What will happen if I change?”
Garrett: Something – My dad always told me, and he wasn’t the one that came up with this, but he always said it, “If you keep doing what you’re doing, you’ll keep getting what you’re getting.” That’s what I thought of when you just said that. If we keep doing what we’re doing, we’ll keep getting what we’re getting. If we’re doing good, we’ll keep getting good. If we’re not doing good, we’ll keep getting bad. That’s interesting.
Ron: One of the other things is you’ve clearly defined what it is you want to accomplish. What I would say, what I recommend is you find someone. I know I’m about to speak out of my own self-benefit, but find someone who has the tools to help you achieve what you want in a shorter period of time. Don’t be like so many people who try to create the wheel when it’s already been created. Find someone who has the strategies. Find someone who has already accomplished what you want.
Here’s the belief to adopt. “Success leaves footprints.” Booker T. Washington said many years ago, “Success leaves footprints.” You can find someone who is already there, and they will show you their footprints, as to how they got there. You are able to do it in a shorter period of time. That’s one of the key reasons that people end up working with me, or end up working with someone like me. They want to get to where they want to go in a shorter period of time. They know it makes sense to find someone who already has the tools and strategies. It’s finding the recipe to make the perfect jambalaya. It’s finding the recipe to make the jambalaya that’s absolutely award winning. It’s out there; you just have to find it.
Garrett: I love everything you have just talked about. I think a lot of people, a lot of my listeners are in online marketing, SEO and the social media industry. We’re always looking for the next best thing. A lot of times, we forget to sit back and find out where we’re going. Life gets so hectic when you’re online, with all the new social media sites coming up, new SEO techniques, and new techniques to market. We forget to sit back and say, “What are our goals? Where are we going?” A lot of times we need somebody to slap us in the face and say, “Okay…”
To me, that’s what I think of you. Not that you’re going to slap somebody in the face, but it’s that…
Ron: [laugh] I will if it’s necessary; interrupt people’s patterns.
Garrett: Exactly. You come in and say, “Where do you want to go? What are you going to do to get there?” You walk them through their mind and see what their behavior is. I’m really glad you went through that – what NAC and NLP and all that is. Before I met you, I had no idea what that stuff was. Since I’ve met you, and listened to some of your radio shows and read some of your articles, and tweets on Twitter, it helps me sit back and re-evaluate, “Where am I going? What am I doing?” I guess I need to send you a check, right?
Ron: Absolutely, a blank check [laughter]. We will work together for a long time. One of the fascinating things I heard was a story about this multi-millionaire. He was going to a seminar. The promoter of the seminar asked, “Why are you coming to this seminar? You’re already financially successful?” The guy looks at him and said, “You don’t get it. The reason I’ve come to this seminar is I know that you never know when you’re going to find a new distinction, a new idea, a new concept, a new method that’s going to take you to a whole other level. You never know when you’re going to find that.” This gentleman – it wasn’t just about his finances. It was about any area of his life.
One of the reasons that people invest in coaching or group coaching with me, is regardless of where they are in their lives, whether they’re already extremely successful, is they recognize that there’s another level. Just because they are extremely successful financially, doesn’t mean they’re extremely successful in their relationships, or that they’re extremely successful in the area of health and fitness. It’s great to have a coach. I have a coach. For those listening, if you come across someone who is calling themselves a coach, and they don’t have a coach, that’s a red flag.
You were about to ask me another question.
Garrett: Let’s start a little bit on the track of online marketing, SEO, and talk a little bit to my listeners. There are a lot of exciting trends out there in the online-marketing industry. There’s the rise of social media. In your opinion, are there any good, exciting trends, or how do you see the Web changing in the next six months, year, or two years?
Ron: Wow, I believe if people want to dominate in their market, they must learn how to effectively utilize this tool of social media in their marketing, adding it to the mix. That, in my mind, is the direction and what I’m hearing, and my pulse on things. More so, because I believe I have one of the best social media marketing experts in the world, consulting and coaching me. That’s Maria Reyes-McDavis, who you know. The direction is that social media is becoming a must for your business to be successful. I’m talking about it doesn’t matter if you have a brick and mortar type business. I don’t believe there is a business that can’t benefit from being involved in internet marketing or social media marketing, in some form or fashion.
One of the exciting trends that I’ve come across as a result of having Maria working with me is that so many people would be overwhelmed by what it takes to be successful online if they didn’t have someone like Maria. Frankly, I was in that place of, “Whoa, this is too much!” There are too many things to do, too many social networks, too many – I’ll don’t even know all the proper names for all of this stuff. That’s one of the beliefs that I have – I don’t need to know everything about something to use it.
I’ve been using social media to market, but the trend that I’m seeing it that there are brilliant people, like yourself, who know how to simplify this process of utilizing social media to market themselves. To help someone to become very effective at utilizing it, regardless of what their schedule is like, so they can – again, the focus is to dominate. It’s not to be number ten. It’s to be number one.
Certainly, to me, that’s probably not the answer you were looking for, but the trend, to me, is that there are brilliant people like yourself, and Maria, who know how to help you get to where you want to go in a shorter period of time. That’s part of what I’m all about. Anyone listening, when you hear another interview of me, you’re going to hear me say that again. It’s what I do.
I’m a modeler. I model. If I can’t model you, I will work with you in some form or fashion. We’ll find some way to work together. I recognize the time that it can take for me to get to where I want to go without you. It also depends. Some people don’t want to get there as fast. Some people like to coast. Frankly, I don’t enjoy coasting so much.
Garrett: Thank you for that. That’s an interesting angle where you see the Web changing with online marketing and the trends. I like that and I totally agree. People can make it hard or they can make it easy on themselves.
Obviously in the news, everything we hear about is the down economy and that’s obviously the hot topic. Tell us your opinion on how small businesses, entrepreneurs can stay afloat and continue to be successful in this economy.
Ron: That’s a great question. There are several things. A few that are really important. First and foremost, it’s to look at your marketing. Let me say this; I’m going to give credit where credit is due. This is something that I model from Jay Abraham. He talks about how there are only three ways to grow a business. One is to get more customers. The second is to increase the average amount of their spend with you, the amount that they spend with you. The third is to increase the frequency or the number of times they spend money with you. I would be focused in on those areas, simply because they’re the most profitable areas to focus in on growing your business, sustaining your business; it’s focusing in on marketing techniques that are going to help you do that. Otherwise, what’s the alternative?
It costs six times more to generate a new customer than it does to resell an existing customer. It’s important to get more customers, but you will see more profitability, and this is why I’m suggesting people focus on repeat business. How do you do that? You want to focus on building deeper relationships with your existing clients. Focus on recapturing relationships you had with past clients or customers.
Sometimes all it takes to make that happen is for you to pick up the phone and call them. Send them a letter, that invites them to reengage you at a special rate. If you don’t do that, send them a gift, something that will cause them to reconnect.
It’s been proven. I don’t remember the numbers, but there was a study done in the retail industry of credit card buyers. Why do these people stop buying? It was a high percentage, don’t quote me, but it was something like over half had stopped doing business with this retail establishment, for no reason at all. Life just happened. That happens a lot in business. People don’t stop doing business with you because your product didn’t perform, or your service sucked. Something happened in their life and they stopped. It’s simple to reconnect with people.
More important than those things, I know this is going to sound crazy that I’m saying this is more important than taking those actions, but you’ll understand why when I say it. It’s understanding really what is helping you to create the results that you want in your life. It’s understanding that the reason you’re able to achieve anything in your life is because you’re taking certain actions, or you behave in a certain way, you have certain habits. What drives those behaviors is your emotional state.
Here’s what’s more important than the marketing aspect of things, to stay afloat in this economy. It’s to stay in control of your emotions. There are so many people right now that are afraid, overwhelmed, absolutely have no vision as to how they’re going to make it happen in their life. I’m saying right now, stop doing that to yourself, and begin to grab hold to that vision that you had about what you were going to accomplish in your business. Hold onto that as tightly as you can.
Each and every morning that you get up, focus on that vision and stay focused on that vision. Think about the things you’re grateful for. One of the greatest things you can do for yourself is to focus on all of the blessings you have right now. Right now you can change the way you feel so you are behaving in a way that’s going to produce the results you want.
I can tell you this; if you are overwhelmed, you’re going to behave differently than if you are feeling grateful. Two opposite things will happen when you are feeling those two different emotions. It’s important. How do you change the way you feel?
One of the things I want to make sure I mention is the questions you are asking yourself, have the biggest impact on how you feel at any given moment. Some questions to ask yourself, especially if you are feeling down is, “What about this situation? What do I have to believe in order to feel the way I do in this situation?” Again, we’re coming back to beliefs. There are certain things people believe about their situation that is disempowering them. Once you’ve asked yourself that question, ask yourself, “What could I believe that will empower me, and free me, and cause me to move in the direction of my vision?”
Taking control of your mental focus is important. One of the fastest ways to do this is to ask yourself a different question. The other is to pay attention to how you’re using your physiology, or your body. Every emotional state has a certain posture related to it.
If we were at a basketball or baseball game right now, and our team was winning, what would we be doing after the guy steps up, knocks a ball out of the park, and it’s the team we’re rooting for? What do we do? We would cheer. We’d be yelling. We’d be happy. We recognize right away that there is a physiology to how we feel. You can see that. That’s what you should do in your life. Celebrate the home run before you ever hit the home run. Celebrate that you’re going to hit the home run before you ever do it. This is what we discovered that top-performing athletes do. They visualize that they’re going to hit the home run before they hit it.
Continually be focused on that. That’s how you’re going to achieve your vision in a shorter period of time. Use your physiology in a way that’s going to cause you to get the results you want. The way you use your body at any given time, is the fastest way to change the way you feel. Asking questions is a fast way to change your focus. If you want to change the way you feel in an instant, move in a different way. Make it a drastic movement.
If anyone listening right now is – some of you probably are feeling somewhat excited about what you’re hearing because you’re learning something new. You can make that more intense. On a scale of zero to ten, if you’re in a state of excitement right now, you can change that if you knocked it out of the park. If you imagined that you were going to knock it out of the park, whatever it is that you have in front of you, the task, the project, you’re going to knock it out of the park. Celebrate it now. When you go to do it, to do the menial tasks that are involved with getting it done, you get more out of yourself.
Garrett: Ron, I can’t thank you enough. Those tips and the way you teach, and everything we talked about today, I know are going to change some people’s lives that have listened, are going to help them through this down economy. You have to just get that out of your mind. Don’t think about the down economy, think of the success you’re going to have in this down economy.
Ron: Exactly, it’s okay to look at the way things are. I’m not saying ignore the way things are. I’m saying regardless of the way things are, storm through it anyway. In spite of the fear, do it anyway.
Garrett: That’s awesome. Ron, again, thank you for your time. You’ve given some great information, great motivation for me. I know it will be for the listeners as well. Finally, if my listeners would like to find out more about you and your services online, tell us where they should go.
Ron: At the top of the interview, you gave my website, one of them anyway. That is Howtoinfluencepeoplenow.com. It’s a great way to reach out and find out more about me. Another way, actually, I invite everyone to come listen to my radio show. Enter ImmediateInfluence.com, or www.immediateinfluence.com. It will take you to my radio show. You can listen to some of the recorded shows that I’ve been doing. I’m extremely excited that any time, any day now, the blog, the Immediate Influence blog is going to be unveiled. That’s something Maria is working on right now. I’m really excited about that. That’s another way to find me on the Web.
Garrett: Again, I’ll have links to all those, for those that are listening, that might be listening on their iPod or iTunes. Again, Ron, thank you for your time. I hope you have a wonderful successful business and life. I know you’ve helped me. I know you will help many others. Thank you for being with me.
Ron: It was my pleasure. Thank you so much for having me.
